4. What’s your current NOTP?

SiHyuk. Like no. Put them together in a fic that doesn’t end in HyukHae and I’m out.

12. Have you ever been disappointed when your ship finally got together?

Well… I don’t think any of my ships have officially got together/”canon” so… I can’t say I’m disappointed lol

15. Have you ever “shipped at first sight”?

A lot. xD After seeing an old EunHae moment (might have been in the mini-drama filming or that era), I thought, “Yes these two need to never separate.” Applies to other ships too.

Thanks for asking!

So I hear controversy over hae’s Arabic elsa and accusations of “brown face” as well when it’s kinda visible through most fan photos and cams that he’s currently quite tan? May I also remind you that suju is known for cosplaying other ethnicities in the past? I’m kinda curious as to why it’s seen as so extremely wrong as, stated before, they have done something like this before. Take in mind that Koreans often see things like these as pretty funny (although at times pretty racist) and suju maybe didn’t see this as offensive (this reminds me of shinee and the sombreros but I saw nothing wrong in that) and more as an homage to fans maybe? I won’t take sides though but maybe we’ll see some sort of apology to quell the fans… Who knows. Photo credit as tagged

so i already sent euminhae a few (hopefully polite!) asks regarding this post, sorry dear. not enough of us kpop fans are openly critical enough so i changed my mind and decided to post publicly instead of through private asks.
this kind of attitude runs rampant in our fandom - while it’s better than acknowledging problematic shit and saying “i just don’t care,” it’s just as harmful to say “i don’t see what the problem is” and gloss over the issue.
i’m getting this out of the way right now: it’s GOOD to be critical of your oppas and it doesn’t mean you have to hate them instead. you can support your faves and still call them out on this!!! ****
there are others who could say this more eloquently but i’ll try. firstly, whether or not donghae is tan lately has no bearing on the issue. brownface, (and blackface, and yellowface, etc) is an issue any time someone presents as a race which is not their own.
suju cosplaying as other ethnicities in the past doesn’t make this irrelevant. it means people haven’t been critical enough when that happens. i saw discussions about blackface before, probably because of the circles i run in, so yes people DO make a big deal about it all the time. we’re just not loud enough.
re: koreans seeing racial differences as funny. sweeping issues like this under the rug because many koreans don’t mean to be offensive does a disservice to them.i see a lot of people using this argument because they think it means they know a lot about korean culture, but actually that just proves the opposite (and veers dangerously into the realm of racism itself.) everyone is capable of learning why it’s important not to impersonate another race. korea is capable of doing better. pretending like koreans can’t understand why it’s a problem is infantalising them, which, coincidentally, is a vehicle for racism. think about why it’s wrong to make fun of the way an asian person looks or the way their accents sound: because westerners have been using that cultural difference to dehumanize asian people for centuries.
with regards to donghae himself. do i think he meant to offend anyone? hell naw. that kid has a heart of gold. does someone need to sit him down and tell him why this wasn’t the best costume choice? absolutely. the fact that it keeps happening in kpop means there aren’t enough people around them who will stop idols and tell them no. hence the whole “let’s not sweep racism under the rug just because we love someone.” personally, i’m inclined to believe that he thought it was a way of acknowledging and appreciating Arab ELF, but he went about it exactly the wrong way, and his intentions don’t negate the harm brownface causes.

in full agreement with rain—dear over my second fave donghae and all the implications of this. i personally don’t think his skin was even a touch darker, and that eliminates the discussion of brownface — unlike yesung’s nick fury costume, in which he definitely darkened his skin. most of the elsa’s reflected the superhero cosplays from earlier, like ryeowook’s gollum, and that’s clearly the nasty Iron Man facial hair rubber band thing from hae’s outfit.
even though i am south asian and muslim by birth, i personally have mixed feelings on deeming ANY use of foreign outfits as cultural appropriation though there is a shit ton of it in kpop as it is.  i can’t see this as racism the way i see blackface and yellowface considering their historical contexts but i’m also not surprised that it’s generated questions and/or controversy. that’s the risk you take when you cosplay a stereotype of a different ethnic group instead of an actual PERSON.  like, being a mexican for halloween is stupid because there are mexican people, but if you want to dress up as a specific mexican character or historical figure without resorting to brownface, i don’t think that’s inherently offensive. but here i can’t think of a specific person being cosplayed so… :/

Thank you both for responding on this and pointing out everything politely and I’m a way that’s very understanding. I see exactly what you’re getting it, and in that form, I will fix some of the ways I think about the culture itself. Having dealt with plenty of racism myself, I understand how plenty of your points make sense. I just wanted to see a clear answer as to why everyone was upset and I clearly saw it as myechi pointed it out at the end as they made have wanted to recreate previous costumes but for some reason it didn’t go that way. I apologize if I offended anyone but I was sincerely curious about this and now I know and have been greatly educated on the matter so I thank you both. I am not one to gloss things over, I do see something was done incorrectly and I hope they notice it as well.
